How did the Christmas tree evolve?
Christmas tree refers to an evergreen tree decorated with fir trees or pine trees with lights, candles and ornaments. As one of the important elements of Christmas, the modern Christmas tree originated in Germany and gradually became popular worldwide, becoming one of the most famous traditions in Christmas celebrations.
It is said that the Christmas tree first appeared on the so-called Saturn Festival in ancient Rome in mid-December. Nowadays, people usually put an evergreen plant such as a pine tree into the house or outdoors before and after Christmas, and decorate it with Christmas lights and colorful decorations. And put an angel or star on top of the tree. In November 2019, Osaka USJ launched a winter Christmas tree, setting the Guinness World Record for nine consecutive years.
The German missionary Nigus used a fir tree to worship the Holy Child in the 8th century. Subsequently, the Germans took December 24th as the festival of Adam and Eve. They put small cookies representing the holy bread on the “paradise tree” symbolizing the Garden of Eden at home to symbolize atonement; candles and balls were also lit to symbolize Christ.
By the 16th century, the religious reformer Martin Luther designed a Christmas tree filled with candles and balls in order to obtain a starry Christmas night. In the 18th century, it became popular among German Lutheran followers. In the 19th century, it became popular throughout Germany and became a deep-rooted tradition in Germany. In the early 19th century, the Christmas tree came to England.
